First Year Leadership Experience
My first experience was coming to campus a week early to participate in the hall opening team. I was one of about 150 students who assisted other students on move-in day. For my second leadership experience this year, I was elected to be the multicultural resident’s committee chair of Daniels Hall Association. Being a member of the executive board of Daniels hall meant that I had to attend weekly meetings, vote on RA programs, manage a multicultural resident’s committee budget, and create programs for residents. For my third experience in leadership, I was a member of community commissions. Community commissions is one step below Judicial Affairs, and we deal with minor policy violations and infractions. These three leadership experiences helped push me as a UC student and as a leader on campus. I chose to get involved in these experiences because I wanted to meet new people and make connections on campus that I might not have been able to make within the community of DAAP. These experiences were extremely meaningful because they gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, and turned out to be very helpful when I started applying for RA and SOL positions.
For my artifact, I chose to include my first All-Hall Program I created for Daniels Hall association as the multicultural residents' committee chair. As the MRCC of Daniels hall, I had a requirement to make at least one program for residents during the year. I chose to play an all-hall game of spoon tag. In order to get the game set up, we made a sign up sheet for the residents to sign if they wanted to play when they came through the lobby. Once we had a list of about 115 people who wanted to play, I had to create the list of players and their assignment. Then that assignment had to be put on a spoon and sent out to the resident. This whole program showed me how much work it takes to organize events and plan a program for 115 people. I had to make decisions and plan elements that I hadn't originally planned on. This entire event pushed me as a leader and I feel that it prepared me for my upcoming job as an RA.
